Supply of SUNSCREENS in Australia
Australia has the highest rate of melanoma in the world. Many Australians use
sunscreen every day of their lives, sometimes over large areas of the body. Most sunscreens are regulated as medicines under the Therapeutic Goods Act 1989. In Australia all medicines and must be entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods before they may be lawfully sold. Sunscreens may be exempt, Listable or Registrable. Exempt sunscreens are only those SPF 3 or below. This advice deals only with Listable sunscreens.
Listable sunscreens must meet the following:
- The Manufacturer meets acceptable standards of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) &
- The formulation contains only ingredients permitted in Australia &
- The claimed SPF has been tested according to AS/NZS 2604:1998 and is 4 or greater; &
- The labelling complies with AS/NZS 2604:1998, the Labelling Order and the Therapeutic Goods Advertising Code.
SPF Testing to AS/NZS 2604:1998
The claimed SPF Factor must be tested according to AS/NZS 2604:1998 - Australia/New Zealand Standard: Sunscreen products: evaluation and classification (available from Standards Australia) and Test Certificates must be held and produced on request by TGA. Testing can be carried out overseas but it must be carried out according to the Australian Standard.
